Why Social Medias Need To Be Regulated In India?

See, this is one of the most hot and controversial topic in the India right now. Few days ago, GOI sent a show cause notice to big social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google to show the reason of not being able to comply with the new rules and regulations under IT Act( Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) 2021. Under these guidelines, the OTT platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar)and Social Media platforms like( Fb, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp, Google, Sharechat) are to be held responsible for the content posted by the users on their platform. So they need to regulate the contents on their platforms strictly. According to guidelines, the platforms will need to disclose the first originator of a mischievous tweet or message. Those can be in relation to the sovereignty of India, the security of the state, relations with foreign states, rape, etc. Moreover, in a move that caused a stir, the government ordered that social media platforms would be bound under the law to remove any content flagged by authorities within 36 hours. Additionally, they had to set up a complaint redressal mechanism. Meaning there will need to place an officer based in the country to resolve the matter.  While many of the social media platforms like Fb and Google agreed to comply with the new IT rules and regulation, social media platforms like Twitter and Whatsapp disagreed to comply with the new rules and regulations showing that
new rules and regulations put forward by GOI going to destroy the privacy of the users completely.

After the news of GOI sending a warning to ban the social media platforms, some users got fumed and accused the GOI of destroying their privacy and desperately trying to  surpress the voice against govt by violating their rights of freedom of speech and expression of individuals.  I agree privacy seems to be a main concern but i dont really agree with the accusations put by the left wingers. Since Govt of many countries are also bringing rules and regulations to regulate the social media, so why shouldn't India!

The  following are the reasons why i think that the social media and ott platforms need to be regulated by GOI:-

1- With the decrease in the price of Internet and smartphones, more and more people are joining the social media platforms for various purposes . With the rise in the no of of social media users, we have seen the rise in hate speech, fake news and many anti-national activities on social media.

2- During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many fake news were spreading rapidly on social media platforms such as Whatsapp and Fb  which created a panic among the public which ultimately complicated the India's fight against COVID-19.

3- As we all know that the relationship between Hindu and Muslim community is not that good in India. Sometimes post on social media can create a riot in between the the two communities. Banglore Riot in 2019, CAA Protest are the perfect example how a single post on social media can led to violence.

4-  Sometimes these social media platforms become a medium of transmission of propaganda.  And many political parties use it as a tool to spread their propaganda for their political benefits. Recently toolkit of a political party was exposed which shows how social media is used by some politicians to spread their propaganda against the govt. And we also  know how propaganda is spread especially against Hindus during the Hindu festivals.🙂

5-  Now a days most of us like  to watch Web series on OTT platforms. But if we see the recent trends,  most of the web series are now indirectly promoting Pornography, Anti- Hindu propaganda etc.

6-  In recent years a trend of Trolling has been started in social media in India. In many instances we have seen people trolling celebrities and harassing other people on social media.

As Social Media has a special place in our day to day life, so certain elements needs to be regulated. To stop the misuse of thesocial media for personal or political agenda by individuals or political parties, to stop the spread of fake news and hate  post which can lead to violence, It is the need of the hour that social media needs to be regulated by the Government.🙂
